Crossover to the allroad
While the crossover SUV has replaced the wagon as America’s go-to family hauler, there are many drivers out there that simply don’t want a high-riding SUV. Meeting the demand for a capable, more car-like alternative is the 2017 Audi A4 allroad®, and it's all-new for 2017 with a redesigned powertrain and suspension, a high-grade luxury interior, and enough advanced technology to redefine the the meaning of "luxury utility."
Powertrains and Performance
All 2017 Audi A4 allroad® models are powered by the new 2.0-liter TFSI® four-cylinder engine. Power output is impressive, with this particular mill generating 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The new powertrain is paired with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission and the automaker's new quattro® all-wheel drive system with ultra® technology. All this tech is backed by a redesigned five-link suspension with standard adaptive dampers.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the A4 allroad® is no slouch, earning an EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined (23 city/28 highway).* The new model comes standard with Audi drive-select featuring five drive-select modes, including comfort, auto, dynamic, individual, and offroad.
Features and Trims
The 2017 Audi A4 allroad® starts at $44,000** and is available in Premium, Premium Plus, and the new Prestige trim levels.
Standard features for the base-level Premium model include 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, LED running lights and taillights, and automatic xenon headlights for your convenience. The Premium trim also comes equipped with automatic wipers, heated mirrors, rear privacy glass, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, and leather upholstery.
On the tech front, the A4 allroad® piles on the goods and comes with the automaker's MMI® infotainment system with seven-inch color display. This system lets you pair your smartphone via Bluetooth® and stream calls and music right from your handset. Those calls will come out crystal clear, too, thanks to a 10-speaker audio system—complete with CD player, satellite radio, and the Audi Digital Music Interface.
Premium Plus models add even more features for you to enjoy, such as auto-dimming and power-folding outside mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, heated front seats with driver memory settings, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass. The Premium Plus model also gets a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen® 3D Sound System with 16-channel amplifier and 755 watts, plus the new Audi connect® CARE emergency telematics system, which includes features such as vehicle status report, online roadside assistance and service interval notification, and automatic crash notification in the case of an emergency. This system is backed by up to 4G LTE connectivity (where available).
The new Prestige model offers the ultimate in Audi luxury with the Audi virtual cockpit, a 12.3-inch display with 60 fps NVIDIA® core processing power and a full-color head-up display. Designed to be incredibly user-friendly, the system is paired with smart new MMI® control technology that lets drivers access functions and enter commands via the multifunction steering wheel.
Customizing your allroad® even further is as simple as selecting from a number of available packages. Premium Plus models get special access to a Technology package, which includes MMI Navigation along with additional safety features that include a blind-spot monitoring system, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors. Other options include the available Sport Package (front sport seats and a black cloth headliner) and Cold Weather Package (heated steering wheel and rear seats).
Design
The 2017 A4 allroad® is a sleek and smartly styled wagon. It’s so aesthetically pleasing that even the most hardcore wagon critics will find it difficult to look away, especially with an updated grille and lights on the 2017 model. Like other Audi models (and its A4 cousin) the A4 allroad®’s aesthetic strength lies in its clean lines and simple design.
Step inside and the theme is much the same. The A4 allroad®’s interior is simple but never dull. Complementing the steering wheel’s three-spoke design is standard leather upholstery that feels as good as it looks.
The center console features an intuitive mix of buttons and dials. Above the center stack sits the vehicle’s MMI system that is controlled most elegantly by an array of buttons and a rotating knob. The standard configuration places these buttons on the dash, while opting for the optional navigation system places the buttons and knob on the console between the front seats.
The allroad®’s cargo space is another high point in what seems to be a never-ending list of charms. There is a total of 24.2 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 58.5 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded flat.
Safety
We know the allroad® has style and smarts, but what about safety features? Every 2017 Audi A4 allroad® model includes antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags, a rearview camera, and the Audi pre sense® basic and pre sense® city systems (including automatic seat-belt pre-tensioners and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking).
Available features include rear-seat side airbags, Audi connect® CARE emergency telematics, Audi pre sense rear with rear collision detection, and a Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition capabilities.
