2017 Audi A4

New for 2017

The A4 is completely redesigned for 2017.

A High-Tech Luxury Car

The compact luxury sedan segment is one of the most competitive in the industry, with many carmakers striving to stand out in a crowded garage. The 2017 Audi A4 tries to do that with technology, blending Audi’s signature style and engineering with a greater level of gadgetry than the competition offers.

Powertrains and Performance

For 2017, Audi is consolidating A4 powertrain options down to one engine and transmission, with a choice of front-wheel drive or quattro® all-wheel drive. The sole engine option is a 2.0-liter turbocharger four-cylinder unit, which produces 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

With front-wheel drive, Audi says the A4 will do 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, while all-wheel drive cuts that time to 5.7 seconds. Both versions will reach a top speed of 130 mph. EPA fuel-economy figures are 28 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway)* with front-wheel drive, and 27 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway)* with all-wheel drive.

Audi is known for its all-wheel drive systems, and the A4 gets a particularly capable version thanks to a self-locking center differential and wheel-selective torque control. The car itself benefits from greater use of aluminum, allowing for weight savings of 99 pounds in front-wheel drive models, and 66 pounds in all-wheel drive models.

The 2017 A4 also comes standard with Audi Drive Select, which allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, and Individual modes that change the car’s behavior. The drive modes change shift points, steering assistance, suspension firmness, and adaptive cruise control (on models so equipped).

Features and Trims

The 2017 Audi A4 is a four-door, five-seat small luxury sedan. It’s available in three trim levels, starting at $37,300.**

Standard equipment on the base A4 Premium model includes automatic Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, power-adjustable heated exterior mirrors, heated windshield, three-zone automatic climate control, leather seating surfaces, eight-way power front seats, multifunction steering wheel, sunroof, LED ambient interior lighting, 7.0-inch MMI color display, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and more.

The midlevel A4 Premium Plus model incorporates all of the applicable standard features of the A4 Premium, and adds full LED headlights, S-Line exterior appearance package, trunk liner, heated front seats, driver seat memory, 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system, and more.

The top A4 model is the Prestige, which includes all of the applicable standard features from the Premium and Premium Plus, as well as MMI Navigation Plus infotainment system with voice control and 8.3-inch touchscreen, handwriting recognition technology, Virtual Cockpit, which replaces the gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch display screen, head-up display, and more.

In addition to the standard equipment, optional features include the Sport Package (black cloth headliner, front sport seats, four-way lumbar support, sport suspension), comfort adaptive suspension, Cold Weather Package (heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel), and Warm Weather Package (front ventilated sport seats with lumbar, rear sunshades).

Design

Audi gets a lot of its praise for its current design language, so changes made for the all-new 2017 A4 were more evolutionary than revolutionary. The A4 should look pretty familiar to anyone acquainted with the handsome outgoing-generation model, but the seemingly small changes make a big difference.

The front fascia includes Audi-signature elements like a large “Singleframe” grille and LED daytime running lights, but everything is sharpened up and tightened to give the A4 a sportier feel. The sedan also has a classic cab-rearward silhouette, with a wrap-around shoulder line flowing from the hood to the rear of the car. At the back, standard LED taillights and dual exhaust complete the look.

The interior gets a high-tech makeover. The A4 is now available with the Virtual Cockpit display that debuted on the 2016 TT. This is a digital display that replaces the traditional gauge cluster and (for the most part) the center-stack display. It shows everything from virtual gauges to a navigation map, and puts it all closer to the driver’s line of sight.

The rest of the interior is well crafted, too. Well-bolstered sport seats and a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel are appropriate for a sports sedan like the A4. The A4 boasts a useful 13 cubic feet of cargo space, and a 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench seat accommodates longer items.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Audi A4 includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, a rearview camera, and a full array of airbags. Optional features include Parking System Plus with front and rear sensors, SOS telematics system, rear side airbags, Audi Pre Sense, and the Driver Assistance Package, which includes adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, high beam assist, and traffic sign recognition.

Bottom Line

The 2017 Audi A4 is sharper and smarter than ever.
