Q4 and Q8 Crossovers Joining the Audi SUV Lineup

Audi announced back in 2012 that it intended to have a larger SUV presence, and now the automaker is moving forward with plans to build the Q8 and Q4 crossovers. The “coupe-like” models will go into production in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

The Q8 is slated to be the flagship in the Audi SUV lineup. Audi has described it as having “great spaciousness with emotive design” and “the latest technologies in assistance and infotainment systems.” The Q8 will likely compete with the BMW X6, Mercedes–Benz GLE Coupe and Range Rover and will be built in Bratislava, Slovakia on the same production line as the Audi Q7. As such, it will likely share the same platform and engine range as the Q7.

The Audi Q4 is expected to be a slightly larger, much sportier version of the Q2. It will be positioned between the Q3 and Q5 and should compete with the BMW X4. The Q4’s styling is similar to that of the TT Offroad concept unveiled in 2014 in Beijing. Mechanically, however, the model will likely be closer to the Q3, as it will be produced on the same line at the plant in Györ, Hungary.

The Q4 and the Q8 are only the beginning of Audi’s SUV push. Audi intends to expand its Q lineup from four to seven models by 2019 and expects SUVs to eventually account for half of its total global volume. Browse the current Audi SUV lineup at Audi Silver Spring.
