Rumor: Audi to Build Maybach Rival?
The automotive world is always rife with speculation, and the latest rumor pertaining to Audi could see the Inglostadt-based automaker compete in a segment for the very first time.
According to a recent report by Auto Express, Audi is seriously considering taking on Mercedes-Benz’s Maybach S600 with an extra-long-wheelbase ultra-luxury sedan of its own.
The new model would utilize the platform currently used in the Audi A8 L, which would serve as the basis for an even longer sedan, and could even spawn a large coupe and convertible duo to challenge the new S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet.
Speaking to Auto Express, Audi's newly appointed technical boss Dr. Stefan Knirsch explained that Audi was “thinking about such an endeavor, adding that "the success of the extra-long version of the S-Class has got us wondering about whether there could be a business case for that in the future.”
Audi is no stranger to new ultra-luxurious products. Earlier this year it quietly debuted the A8L Security (pictured above), an armored version of the A8L that offers the highest level of ballistic protection available in passenger cars, and can even withstand grenades.
The German automaker could also use the lessons learned from the recently unveiled six-door A8 limousine that was commissioned exclusively for King Harald V of Norway.
The one-off (pictured) is truly a sight to behold and sports features fit for a king (literally), and could serve the brand well as it seeks to compete in this niche yet increasingly competitive segment.
The success of the Maybach S600 and Audi’s own work for Norway’s royal family suggests that Audi sees demand for vehicles positioned above the A8 L. Whether that results into a fully-fledged production model remains to be seen, but you can rest assured if any luxury brand is capable of such a feat, it’s Audi.
Until then, if you can “settle” for two less doors and require the utmost in luxury and refinement, we highly recommend contacting Audi Silver Spring and scheduling a test drive of the “standard four-door” 2016 Audi A8 L.
